Last Monday night a huge crowd turned out for SpoRock the Vote, hosted by the Campaign for Lisa Brown.
Scores of young people came in waves to watch great bands, meet State Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown, and register to vote last Monday night. By registering to vote at Empyrean Coffee House (a well known music venue among the under 30 crowd in the 3rd district of Spokane) fans got in free to see Bodhi Drip, The Globes, Karli Fairbanks, Pickwick, and David Bazan. The evening was kicked off by the Havermale High drummers at 5:30 pm and by the time Seattle headliner David Bazan played the house was packed. Some took advantage of the mild weather and a reprieve from the heat of the crowd by listening from the parking lot outside the open windows.
The 3rd Legislative District, which is the heart of the City of Spokane, is statistically the youngest district in the state and also has some of the lowest voter turnout. The Campaign wanted a way to reach new voters and have their first experience with politics and Senator Brown to be a fun and positive one. The idea to have a concert and register young people was a natural one for Lisa who enjoys concerts and whose teenage son's band Bodhi Drip played the opening set. We were lucky to have the help of Empyrean owner Crisy Riddle who recruited excellent local and Seattle-based musicians who are sensitive to the issues facing young people and positive in their messages.
The day of the event we registered nearly 50 new voters and many more who were already registered pledged to register their friends. Many of the new voters were surprised to learn that the State Senate Majority Leader was from Spokane, and interested enough in them to put on a concert and be there to meet them. We hope we have inspired them to get more interested in local politics and dispelled some fears about limitations on what a person from Spokane can achieve.

Dear Friends,
Thank you so much for voting in the primary. My campaign for re-election to the State Senate is going very well. We received about 77% of the vote! But we need to keep the momentum going for the general election, and you can help!
First, please come to our Local Heroes breakfast event, Friday September 26th from 7:30-8:30 a.m. at the Red Lion River Inn, Shoreline Room. We will be honoring a few Spokane advocates and activists with “Local Hero” awards. Enjoy a seasonal breakfast, pick up or order a yard sign, and receive a “Brownie for Lisa Brown.” You can enjoy a rare opportunity to have brownies at breakfast, or take it with you as a treat for later-all for a suggested $25 donation ($10 student and low income). Please RSVP by emailing kitty@votelisabrown.org or calling the campaign at (509) 475-3448.
Second, please join Lisa’s List to stay current with my campaign and for periodic updates from me after the election is over by visiting www.votelisabrown.org. As I have an independent opponent it is difficult to predict what opponents of my work in the State Senate will do in the general election. We need a broad network of online support to be able to quickly respond to special interest groups who may try to influence this and future elections.
I pledge to:
• only contact you when necessary to announce campaign activities
• keep you informed of significant developments in the state legislature next session
• keep your email address private
Once again, to join t Lisa’s List simply visit www.votelisabrown.org and enter your email and zip code in the “stay informed” box in the upper right hand corner.
Third, please forward this message to friends and probably allies to help us have a successful Local Heroes event and build the list.
For more information about the campaign visit www.votelisabrown.org. Thank you for your support! I would love to hear from you!
