Ed Murray and House Speaker Frank Chopp.

I join these leaders with steadfast support of equal rights. Now is the time to end same-sex marriage discrimination against countless families — to allow them to receive a Washington marriage license, the same right given heterosexual couples.

The collective statement from Washington’s leaders is clear, committed couples of any sexual orientation should be allowed to declare their love through marriage.

Same-sex marriage would be the final chapter in our equality efforts.

You’ve heard it said that American politics is hopelessly polarized. You’ve seen and heard examples of the bitter name-calling and recriminations that pass for discourse. Yet, by the time the Washington Legislature finished its difficult work this year, leaders in the Senate, both Democrat and Republican, were boasting about their ability to handle their differences in a spirit of bipartisanship. Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown, D-Spokane, discussed the experience recently with The Spokesman-Review. The following transcript is an excerpt from that interview.
