For Immediate Release: March 26, 2012

Contact: Lori Kinnear, 509-850-3233, info@votelisabrown.com

State Senator Lisa Brown Formally Announces Re-Election
Campaign

SPOKANE- State Senator Lisa Brown has announced that she will seek re-election this year in Spokane’s 3rd Legislative District.

“My service in the State Senate is driven by a passion to bring jobs and opportunity to the people of Spokane,” said Brown. “There is a lot at stake in the budget and proposed jobs package that will impact Spokane. That deserves my full attention right now, but I look
forward to getting home once the legislative session ends and kicking off my
campaign.”

Brown points to her record of local investments as a hallmark of her service.

“I’ve led legislative efforts to restore the Fox Theater, re-develop the YMCA/YWCA community centers, and build our Riverpoint medical campus. I look forward to
advancing more partnerships for Spokane’s future.”

Senator Brown– the single mom of a college student who graduated from Spokane schools, also taught economics at Eastern Washington University and currently Gonzaga– will focus on education funding and keeping higher education affordable and accessible in her next term.

“We in Spokane are proud of our schools, higher education institutions, and quality of life,” said Brown, who led efforts to expand graduate degree options at Eastern. “I’ve worked to protect funding for early learning,

K-12 and colleges and universities, but more needs to be done. The best thing we can do to facilitate the jobs of tomorrow is to invest in education today.”

Brown credits regional consensus around critical social and human services as a catalyst for her work on securing resources and support for local non-profits that safeguard families, kids, and the vulnerable.

“I’m proud to have worked alongside so many Spokane leaders in support of the Northwest Autism Center, Guild School, Cross Walk, and other great local organizations,” said Brown. “I look forward to continue this important work-supporting a great community for everyone.

Upon her return from the legislative session in Olympia, Brown intends to meet with voters in Spokane’s neighborhoods, coffee houses, at community events and on their doorsteps.

“I have always enjoyed grass roots campaigning,” said Brown. “The best part of my job is spending time meeting with the people of Spokane.”

Governor Gregoire has made a historic call for the support of full marriage equality in Washington state, along with long-time advocate Sen.

I join these leaders with steadfast support of equal rights. Now is the time to end same-sex marriage discrimination against countless families — to allow them to receive a Washington marriage license, the same right given heterosexual couples.

The collective statement from Washington’s leaders is clear, committed couples of any sexual orientation should be allowed to declare their love through marriage.

Same-sex marriage would be the final chapter in our equality efforts.

You’ve heard it said that American politics is hopelessly polarized. You’ve seen and heard examples of the bitter name-calling and recriminations that pass for discourse. Yet, by the time the Washington Legislature finished its difficult work this year, leaders in the Senate, both Democrat and Republican, were boasting about their ability to handle their differences in a spirit of bipartisanship. Senate Majority Leader Lisa Brown, D-Spokane, discussed the experience recently with The Spokesman-Review. The following transcript is an excerpt from that interview. An audio recording of the full conversation is available on The Spokesman-Review’s website at: spokesman.com/lisabrowninterview.
